Labyrinths at The Pavana

Four Labyrinths at The Pavana Chiang Mai Resort in Thailand

‘Labyrinths offer the opportunity to walk in meditation to that place within us where the rational merges with the intuitive and the spiritual is reborn.’

On the Pavana Chiang Mai Resort (and The Spa Resort Residences) complex you can find four labyrinths. Two of these offer you the possibiltiy to walk free. The Cretan / Classical Labyrinth at Sala Mala (The top sala, an open covered space in nature to rest, on the hill of the resort) and the Chartres / Medieval Labyrinth in the large hotel garden between the main pool and the townhouses.

Not to walk but only as a decor, a small Clasical private garden labyrinth in the front yard of townhouse 'Villa Asia' (townhouse 864) offering a fantastic and welcoming energy. The Chartres essence / Petite Chartres (canvas) labyrinth is only available in consultation and/or due to extreme weather conditions.

Every Wednesday evening In Sala Mala guests have the chance (by reservation) to get an explanation of the Classical Labyrinth as a mirroring life path and to walk it. Surrounded by oil lamps and with special background music for the meditative walk of the Labyrinth, week after week lots of times amazing life reflections take place.

The Pavana Chiang Mai Resort classical (Cretan) Labyrinth in Thailand

Labyrinths offer the opportunity to walk in meditation to that place within us where the rational merges with the intuitive and the spiritual is reborn.

"Your life is a sacred journey. And it is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous challenges at every step along the way. You are on the path... exactly where you are meant to be right now... And from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph, of healing of courage, of beauty, of wisdom, of power, of dignity, and of love."

The Chartres essence / petite Chartres (canvas) Labyrinth at The Pavana Chiang Mai Resort

Due to bad weather conditions during the rainy season, overload of mosquitos, or very high temperatures, Captijn Insight offers The Pavana guests the possibility to have the experience of walking the canvas Labyrinth in the wonderful “The Pavana Room” studio. A great, air-conditioned, meditation and yoga studio, build on a hill, with a wonderful view over the Mae Ann rice valleys.

Our Chartres Essence is a round, 7-circuit labyrinth with elements resembling the Chartres labyrinth. Typically, it is 24 feet / 7.3 meter in diameter.

The lunations of the Chartres labyrinth form a lunar calendar, sufficient for determining the date for Easter (the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox). The full Chartres labyrinth in The Pavana Chiang Mai Resort / The Spa Resort Residences garden has 112 lunations (in our labyrinth represented by 112 bushes), being four lunar months of 28. The Chartres essence, like our Petite Chartres design, has 84 lunations, being three lunar months. Hence, the symbolism is

The biggest drawback for a smaller labyrinth is not the size of the paths, but rather, the small size of the center, which accommodates few people. To remedy this, the Chartres Essence has a center the same size as a full Chartres pattern, almost one-third of the diameter. This proportion allows it to serve a larger number of people at the same time. The entrance is also the most like the full Chartres, simply having one turn in each quadrant rather than a pair of turns.

It is not possible to make free use of this labyrinth because the room is used for several events. In the morning meditation classes will be announced if the regular Wednesday evening Labyrinth walk is changed to The Pavana Room. In consultation it’s also possible to book this guided labyrinth walk for individuals, couples or groups.

Labyrinth prayer

Just and only a free offer. Some thoughts if you are a believer and want to prepare yourself for walking a labyrinth.

Trappist monk Thomas Merton writes about some practices of the spiritual life in this classic volume. Here is a prayer in which he embraces uncertainty through the practice of trust, an essential element of faith.

Thoughts in Solitude

(by Thomas Merton)

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does, in fact, please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this
you will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore, I will trust you always though
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
